You may have noticed an increase in articles from me about Email Marketing lately. Other than it being one of my online areas of specialty, it’s also one of the lowest-cost / highest-return forms of marketing (online or offline); and with my background in wholesale and retail, show me something with such impressive returns from such a small outlay, and I can’t help but get excited!

According to research released today, interesting changes in online buying habits suggest retailers have a growing influence on consumer’s online purchase decisions.
Compared to a similar study in 2004, shoppers are starting their online search with fewer decisions made in advance.

A recent survey by US marketing company Epsilon, found 67% of consumers surveyed purchased products offline as a result of receiving an email, and 50% said that getting a company’s email means they are more likely to purchase either online or offline.
The study explored the impact of email marketing on purchasing behaviour and consumer loyalty.

Some of these tools have been around for years, some are quite new. It seems almost daily I come across more tools that share and mash up multiple data feeds to give interesting competitive intelligence. I’m sure our friends over at Hitwise are getting more and more nervous as companies like Google provide more free information to the public.

Before I joined Exceed Online, I had never known such an acronym-addicted industry. After saying ‘PPC’ to a friend and getting the same quizzical look that my dog gives me when I coo to her lovingly in baby-talk (you know, that adorable look when they tilt their heads ever so slightly?), I realised even the terms I thought were common knowledge can sound nonsensical to someone outside the online industry.
It made me laugh when our accountant said ‘Ohhh, I thought PPC meant paper click not pay per click’ - but if you’ve invested thousands in your website and your website supplier hasn’t told you about SEO or PPC, it’s not funny, it’s time for you to worry…
